Walmart ecommerce growth
The $39.7 billion Walmart generated in ecommerce sales in 2020 was a 58.2% surge on the previous year’s numbers. Impressive as this was, it was still slower than the following year’s growth. In 2021, Walmart’s ecommerce growth rate hit 63.5%— the biggest annual increase in at least four years.
Market analysts attribute the increases in 2020 and 2021 to the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced consumers to stay home and many brick-and-mortar stores to shut. With not many other options available, most went online for their shopping needs.
Walmart’s online sales growth decelerated to 12.8% and 12.2% in 2022 and 2023, respectively, which were around one-fifth of the previous two years’ growth rates. From 2019 to 2023, Walmart’s annual online sales more than tripled, growing at an average annual growth rate of 36.6%. According to experts, online groceries and Walmart’s curbside pickup service spurred the company’s recent ecommerce growth.
Walmart online sales: breakdown by division
The majority of Walmart’s online revenue in its 2023 fiscal year came from its US division. Walmart US generated $53.4 billion in sales, which represents nearly one-third of Walmart’s total online sales. Meanwhile, Walmart International and Sam’s Club brought in $20.3 billion and $8.4 billion, respectively.
