Largest Retailers in the US
The latest data from the National Retail Federation shows that Walmart continues to lead as the top US retailer.
In 2022, the company brought in retail sales of $499.7 billion in the US—a 7.8% year-over-year increase. Not only that, but Walmart also grew its store footprint across the country. In 2021, it had 5,326 stores across the country. This number increased to 5,330 in 2022, a 0.1% rise.
The top US retailer’s US share of its sales worldwide fell marginally by one percentage point, from 83% in 2021, to 84% in 2022.
Walmart is expected to see even stronger growth in 2023. Already, recent fiscal data shows the top US retailer generated $152.3 billion in revenue in the first quarter of 2023, a 7.6% annual increase. Most of this revenue growth came from the US market, where net sales grew 7.2% from $96.9 billion a year ago, to $103.9 billion.
Second on the list of the largest retailers in the US is Amazon. With $232.5 billion in US sales in 2022, this was a 6.7% annual increase—slightly slower than the top US retailer’s growth. Unlike Walmart, Amazon was able to grow its share of US sales, from 66% in 2021, to 68% in 2022.
After Amazon, the third-biggest retailer in the US is Costco Wholesale. The company’s US sales surged 16.9% year-over-year to $164.2 billion in 2022—the biggest increase out of the 10 largest retailers in the US by a significant margin. In fourth place is The Kroger Co., whose sales grew 7.5% to $147.6 billion in 2022.
The Home Depot completes the list of the five biggest retailers in the US. The Atlanta-based company’s US retail sales grew 4.3% to $145.9 billion in 2022.
