In 2024, Mother’s Day spending was recorded at $33.5 billion, marking a 6.2% fall—the first annual decrease in six years and the largest decline since 2009. In contrast, the previous two years saw Mother’s Day spending rise by more than 12%.
Mother’s Day spending statistics show that in 2024, the average spend per household fell to $254.04, a 7.3% dip from the $274.02 recorded in 2023. This came as the percentage of people celebrating the occasion held steady at 84%.
Consumers spent the most on jewelry, which has been consumers’ largest expenditure since 2015. In 2024, $7 billion was spent on jewelry for Mother’s Day. This is followed by special outings and electronics, on which $5.9 billion and $3.5 billion were spent, respectively. Gift cards and flowers were consumers’ fourth-biggest expenditures, at $3.2 billion for each category.

The data collected shows that in 2013, overall spending came in at $20.7 billion. This was an 11.3% rise from the previous year and also the first time Mother’s Day spending exceeded $20 billion.

In 2014, Mother’s Day spending fell 3.9% to $19.9 billion—the first annual decrease in at least five years. Expenditure rebounded immediately in 2015, growing by 6.6%, to $21.2 billion. Increases continued for the following three years, before another dip in 2018. That year, Mother’s Day spending fell by 1.7%, to $23.1 billion.
These Mother’s Day statistics show that annual expenditure to honor the special day rose every year from 2019 to 2023. Total Mother’s Day spending in 2019 hit $25 billion, a 7.8% annual rise, before growing again by 7% in 2020, to $26.7 billion. In 2021, expenditure topped $28.1 billion, after a 5.2% increase, and this was followed by a 12.9% increase in 2022, to $31.7 billion.
