With the share of internet traffic from mobile devices on the rise, it’s no surprise that annual mobile commerce sales have also been growing year after year.
Currently, shopping and browsing for products are among the top mobile commerce trends, with nearly one in three consumers doing so. But not all smartphones are created equal. According to recent statistics, there were 136 million iPhone users in the US in 2022. This is 9% more than 2022’s 124.7 million and is one of the biggest annual increases in recent years.
Analysts attribute the large rise to Apple cutting prices on some of its older models, which spurred sales, and the government’s ban on rival brand Huawei.

The number of iPhone users in the US has been growing year after year for at least a decade. In 2012, there were 44.5 million iPhone users—around one-third of the current figure. By 2016, this had more than doubled, to 90.1 million, and two years later, the number of iPhone users in the US surpassed 100 million for the very first time.

From 2012 to 2023, the number of iPhone users in the US increased by 91.4 million. This marks a 205.3% overall increase and an average annual growth rate of 11%.
However, growth has slowed in recent years. From 2013 to 2015, annual growth rates were in double digits, and averaged 23%. But from 2016 to 2023, the average annual growth rate decelerated to 6.5%.
The largest annual increase in the number of iPhone users in the US came in 2013, when it was still a fairly new product. That year, the figure grew by 29.8%. In contrast, the smallest increase, which was registered in 2021, was 2.5%.
Despite the recent slowdown, Apple remains the most popular smartphone brand in the US by a large margin. It has a market share of over 60%, which means that more than two out of every three smartphone users there own an iPhone. In comparison, its biggest competitor, Samsung, has a market share of around 20%.

In terms of the percentage of iPhone users in the US, this number rose to 61.3% in 2024, up three percentage points from 58.3% the previous year. This means that more than three out of every five smartphone user in the US are owners of iPhones.
iPhone’s market share in the US has risen steadily over the past decade. In 2014, less than half of all smartphone users in the country owned an iPhone.
